What is Chutney? Chutney is a spiced preserve. It is made from fresh fruits and vegetables, spices and vinegar. It can be used as a relish or sauce with fish, vegetables, poultry and meats. Only fresh fruits, spices, sugar, and apple cider vinegar are used in Marcia’s Chutneys. Chutneys are slowly simmered for 2-3 hours. This allows the flavors of the spices to infuse with the softened fruit to make the chutneys delicious, with a beautiful color and aroma.

My passion for chutneys began one hot summer afternoon when I was buying vegetables at the University of Maryland Agricultural division farm stand. The lady at the stand was urging me to buy the remaining quarts of blackberries. Obviously tempted by their beauty and very low price she clinched the deal with her jam recipe. I took the blackberries home and fell in love with the art of canning. From jam it was a natural progression to chutneys of which I had discovered on a trip to England. For many years my friends urged me to sell the chutneys so they might enjoy them after they had eaten their gifts. This is the origin of Marcia’s Chutneys and I remain committed to slowly cooking small batches of the best ingredients to make a superior product fit for my dear friends.* A quote from Cranberries Magazine February 2004 |
